Computer Solutions
Computers are wonderful Tools in today's society — as long as they're working properly. They are extremely complicated machines that the typical Family or Small Business does not have the time, or maybe the knowledge, to keep running correctly and in tip-top shape. Unfortunately, there are too many things that can go wrong to count. When something does go wrong, there are times that it seems the whole world has come crashing down. Although it's impossible to plan for every possible problem — or series of problems — that can come up, there are many steps that can be taken to plan for the most common. The most basic step would be to back up your data . . . regularly. Other steps would be to keep the Operating System, Anti-Virus/Anti-Malware software and Firewall updated. These are easy to do and can even be automated with the right software and configurations.
But, as the computer gets older, and software gets added and removed, and accumulated updates start bogging down the system, and Viruses and Malware somehow find their way in, the computer starts getting slower and slower to the point that you feel you need a new computer. If it's a really old computer (say more than 6 or 7 years), that may be true, but there are other, inexpensive steps that you can take to get some of that original speed back. The most drastic would be to replace the Hard Drive with a new, faster and larger capacity one then re-install the Operating System — a long and sometimes painful task. Then you could use the old Hard Drive for Data and/or Backup, unless it's toast.
Depending on what the problem is, there are a number of other, simpler things that you can try before replacing the Hard Drive (or the whole computer), such as adding Memory, removing unnecessary software, moving Data to a different drive or media, using software to deep-clean the hard drive, dusting the inside of the computer, etc. Unfortunately, not everybody is comfortable doing all of this, but . . . .
